What to expect with the Motorola X Phone, and is it a real game-changer?

Earlier today, there was a report that the Motorola X Phone, which is expected to be the flagship announcement at Google I/O this year, would be a "game-changer", but as expected, there really wasn't any information on exactly how the X Phone would go about changing the game. So, we strapped on our thinking caps and tried to come up with some possibilities for what Motorola/Google could unveil that would really change the game.

First, we have to make it clear that we are trying to imagine what the X Phone could offer that would be a true game-changer, and not merely just an evolution of current technology. Because of that (not to mention that the software was mentioned specifically in the earlier rumor), it seems pretty safe to say that the hardware will not be anything game-changing, so let's get that out of the way now.

The Hardware

This is a Motorola phone, so we fully expect it to look the part. Based on educated guesses and previous rumors, it seems reasonable to assume that the X Phone will have a 5" 1080p display with an extremely small bezel, a quad-core processor, and a much better camera than we currently see on Google's Nexus line. There will likely be a pretty beefy battery and Motorola's traditional Kevlar backing. Because Google is involved, there will definitely be NFC built-in, and we think it's likely that the X Phone will have induction charging and may even be compatible with the newly released Wireless Charging Orb.

There are rumors that the storage options will go as high as 128GB, which is possible, but we wouldn't put it as likely. There are also rumors that unlike Google's Nexus devices, the X Phone will offer an SD card slot, but again, we wouldn't hold our breath on that one.

Larry Page made a point to mention flexible/unbreakable displays recently when talking about Motorola, but he also said that sort of evolution in smartphones would be happening in "5 to 10 years". Given that we're expecting devices this year with flexible/unbreakable glass, the argument could be made that the first device on the market with such a display would be a "game-changer", but we're not sold on that.

Ultimately, none of these rumors, or potential hardware specs for the X Phone can be considered "game-changers". All of this is just the standard evolution of hardware. The real potential for changing the game comes on the software side.

The (usual) Software

The assumption is that the Motorola X Phone will be the flagship device launching with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. We already know a bit of what to expect from KLP, like the addition of support for Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy in stock Android, but otherwise, it's unclear. We would like to see the People app finally work like it is supposed to (read: like the WP People Hub, or the BlackBerry 10 Hub), or a unified messaging app, but those wouldn't be game-changers, just a useful updates.

Similarly, there is expected to be an update to the Android UI with KLP, just like we saw with Android 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0, but it's hard to imagine how a UI change could be a bigger "game-changer" than we saw when Google released Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich back in December of 2011. The jump from Gingerbread to ICS was huge, and while Google and Matias Duarte likely have more in store (Matias famously said that the Android UI is only a third of the way along), it's hard to imagine a jump that big with KLP. That said, we could see a different UI change, like the addition of a desktop UI. Many of you would love to see it, but we're skeptical, because Google wouldn't want to kill off Chromebook support by bringing in Android to the same market.

There have also been rumors that Google is focusing a lot of energy on making the camera app in KLP much better than what we've seen. Combine that with the rumor of a Sony lens in the X Phone and that would be quite an improvement, and certainly a "game-changer" for Google, but maybe not for the smartphone ecosystem as a whole.

The same would go for the potential that Google could add a profile changer to KLP. This is another feature that users have been asking for, and since Google has already added multiple user support on tablets in Android 4.2, there's no reason we couldn't see the addition of a profile manager allowing for separate setups for work, home, traveling, etc.

But, again, these are expected updates, and really nothing game-changing, so let's jump into the more radical possibilities.

Galaxy S IV mini is rumored for release in May

Galaxy S IV mini is rumored for release in May - There’s been a lot of talk about what’s being called Samsung Galaxy J. This is not one device, but a family of smartphones. Rumored to be the Galaxy S IV that is highly anticipated, the J Mini (which would be the S4 Mini) as well as another unknown device. New reports today are surfacing with claims that the Mini will actually hit shelves and be available in May, so not long after it’s bigger brother.

Original reports on this device are that the specs will be similar to its elder brother, the Galaxy S IV. The only thing different is the screen size and the lack of wireless charging capability. With that said, this device could mean a great competition for the iPhone 5/ 5S. Our reason behind that? Well, the S IV would be a high end phone and it shall be once again in a class of its own.

Thus, with all that great power in the S IV and having the reports say that the specs are similar for the mini S IV, this phone will be a very powerful device indeed. Well, that’s all for now, we’ll make sure to let you in on the latest Android news. Stay tuned!

Samsung rumored to launch Galaxy S IV Mini in May

Samsung rumored to launch Galaxy S IV Mini in May - Samsung could be releasing a Galaxy S IV Mini in May, shortly after the Galaxy S IV itself, if rumors are to be believed. The smaller version of the expected Galaxy S IV is said to be released at some point in May, and though light on details relating to specifications, it should follow a similar pattern to the Mini variant of the Galaxy S III.

Sources of SamMobile claim that Project J Active, codenamed Fortius and identified as the Galaxy S IV, would be followed by the Project J Mini, codenamed Serrano. Accessories for the Project J Mini, such as a clear cover, flip cover, and a protective cover, apparently need to be done by Week 21, which would be between May 20th and May 26th.

The Galaxy S III Mini turned out to be a neutered version of the Galaxy S III, offering the styling and a number of the features found in its bigger stablemate, though with lower specifications and a 4-inch form. If the Mini for the Galaxy S IV is a similar concept to the Galaxy S III Mini, it will likely have a slower processor, lower-resolution camera, and a much smaller screen, among other features.

Xperia TL with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Xperia TL with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean - Yesterday we reported on Jelly Bean screenshots leaking for the Sony Xperia T (LT30p) and Xperia TL (LT30at). These are from a development version of the firmware so therefore it’s unlikely we’ll see it leak to allow people to download. If you want to know what improvements to expect, then you may want to check out the video below (in Vietnamese). It shows Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean running on the Xperia TL (LT30at).

One of the big improvements is the new launcher (that was leaked yesterday). Apart from that, we noticed a new lock screen and some new software features from the Xperia V such as Superior Auto mode on the camera and ClearAudio+ mode for better audio quality. Obviously as the firmware is still in development, things may change before the final release, but it’s all shaping up nicely so far.

Apple loses again in Dutch suit against Samsung

Apple loses again in Dutch suit against Samsung

AMSTERDAM (AP) - A Dutch court has again ruled against Apple Inc. in a suit against South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., saying that Galaxy tablet computers don't infringe an Apple patent on touch screen interfaces.

The Dutch case is one of many Apple is pursuing against Samsung in their reciprocal patent war. If Apple had been successful in the Netherlands, it could have disrupted Samsung's ability to distribute in Europe through the port of Rotterdam.

Apple lost a request for a provisional ruling in August 2011, and an appeal in January. The Hague District Court's ruling published Thursday is a full-fledged civil suit on the same point. Like British and German courts, the Dutch court found that the touch screen interface Samsung's Galaxy tabs use does not violate Apple's patents.

Xperia T Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware (9.1.A.0.187) spotted in benchmark

Sony Mobile expects to launch the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware update for the Xperia T (LT30p, LT30at) during the middle of Q1 2013. However, prior to this, Sony will be putting the firmware through plenty of test time. It looks like one branch of this firmware has already been discovered on GLBenchmark.

The benchmark listing clearly shows that firmware version 9.1.A.0.187 for the LT30p relates to Android 4.1.1. This means that we are likely to see a jump up from the current Xperia T ICS firmware (7.0.A.1.303) to eDream 9 which will bring Jelly Bean.

This is not the first time we’ve come across eDream 9, we also saw it pop up on the Xperia V (9.0.D.0.175). However, judging by the GLBenchmark listing for the Xperia V, it seems that the 9.0.D.0.XXX firmware is still Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. So we need to keep an eye out for 9.1.A.0.XXX firmware when looking for the Jelly Bean versions.

Interestingly, the recent Sony Odin leaks pointed to eDream 10 firmware (10.1.A.0.XXX) that was also Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. We imagine, unsurprisingly, that Sony is planning a number of software enhancements for its 2013 flagships that will not be in the JB update for the 2012 models.

Samsung exec confirms Galaxy S3 'mini' is on the way

Samsung has confirmed that it will unveil a smaller version of the popular Galaxy S III smartphone tomorrow.

Speaking to Korean media this morning, Samsung mobile chief JK Shin said Samsung will lift the lid on a 4-inch version of the Android-powered smartphone on Thursday, a week after the smartphone maker sent out invitations to a launch event.

Hinting at the device's name, Shin said: "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some may call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini'."

Shin did not reveal any additional details of the device -- such as pricing and availability -- ahead of tomorrow's launch, however. According to The Verge, the 'mini' Galaxy S3 will not be an entry-level device, suggesting it will pack the same features as its larger 4.8-inch sibling.

Samsung sold 20 million Galaxy S3 smartphone in the first 100 days after its launch, and had notched up double the sales of its Galaxy S2 predecessor after five months

Samsung to unveil 4-inch 'mini' Galaxy S III on October 11th

JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, confirmed today that his company will be releasing a four-inch version of the Galaxy S III on October 11th in Germany. Shin announced the news during a meeting with Korean press on Wednesday.

Shin didn't reveal many details about the device, though he said it was spurred by increasing demand for 4-inch devices in Europe. He also noted that it won't be an entry-level handset, telling reporters it will have "full form factor." This would make it an unusual addition to the Android landscape, where high-end devices tend to be 4.5 inches or larger.

"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," Shin said. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"
Shin's confirmation comes just ahead of Apple's rumored iPad mini announcement.

iPhone 5 users complain about purple photos

Some iPhone 5 users are complaining that a burst of purple is showing up in their photos -- and Apple seems to be acknowledging it's just part of how the camera works.

Since Apple's new smartphone was released just over a week ago, some of the millions of users have reported that, when a strong source of light is present in their photographs, the light takes on a purple hue.

The problem was first noted on the forums of online computer magazine Anandtech, where a thread discussing the issue had more than 180 comments Wednesday.

"Yeah, I have a feeling this is going to be Antennagate all over again," one forum member wrote, referencing antenna problems with the iPhone 4. "I've taken 20,000+ photos on my 4S, never ONCE had this problem."

That user then posted two photos that appear to show the flare.

An e-mail from Apple appears to confirm that the purple haze isn't all in users' minds.

Tech blog Gizmodo quoted an e-mail from Apple support to a reader. He claims Apple support staff first said the discoloration shouldn't be happening but shifted after talking to Apple engineers.

"Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures," read the e-mail, as reported by Gizmodo. "The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera."

Apple did not respond to a message seeking comment for this story.

A comparison by Mashable, a CNN content partner, studied similar images taken with an iPhone 5, an iPhone 4S and a Nikon D300. Some of the 5's images had a purple glow around light sources, while others didn't, Mashable reported. None of the images from the other two devices displayed the flares.

Some have speculated that the problem is caused by a sapphire cover that Apple added to the phone's camera.

"The new iSight camera in iPhone 5 features a sapphire crystal lens cover that is thinner and more durable than standard glass with the ability to provide crystal clear images," Apple wrote in promotional material for the phone.

The iPhone 5 has been Apple's biggest launch to date, selling 2 million units in the first 24 hours and 5 million over its first weekend on the market.

But with its popularity have come a handful of persistent complaints, the purple glow being the most recent to gain traction.

Foremost have been problems with Apple's new Maps feature, which for the first time replaced Google Maps as the default mapping software on Apple's mobile operating system. The problems -- landmarks misplaced or misnamed, huge swaths of major cities missing -- prompted Apple CEO Tim Cook to offer a rare apology, promising that it will be fixed and going so far as to suggest other apps in the meantime.

Other iPhone 5 complaints have ranged from its aluminum casing scratching easily to light leaking from openings on the phone.

Fairon said that MTN is unfortunately not in a position to release the dates for when the upgrades will be available to consumers, but will make the necessary announcements to media when there are developments in this regard

Vodacom was also not able to offer a release date, saying that they don’t have a confirmed date on the availability of the software update to customers. “We will notify customers when the software is available,” Vodacom said.

A Cell C spokesperson told MyBroadband that on its network, users are able to upgrade their Galaxy Nexus devices to Android Jelly Bean over the air.

“Upgrades for the Galaxy SIII should be available before the end of the year,” Cell C said. “The availability of the upgrade for the HTC One X will be announced closer to the time.”

Previous Post Next Post iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 – second display battle says Samsung’s is better

A few days ago, just after the iPhone 5 launch, we compared the new iOS device with the Galaxy S3 in a series of posts (drop test, video comparison, benchmarking results and display tests) and in most cases the iPhone 5 proved to be the better device.

Today we’re going to take another look at the display battle between the two. In our previous coverage, we showed you that the experts at DisplayMate concluded that the iPhone 5’s display is superior to the Galaxy S3’s but now we have a new report that says the opposite. Sort of.

A study conducted by IHS says that the Galaxy S3’s display is thinner and has a wider color gamut than the iPhone 5’s panel. The Galaxy S3 features a 1.1mm thick display capable of offering the full color gamut (NTSC standard) while the iPhone 5 has a 1.5mm thick display that is capable of offering just 72% of that full color gamut.

However, it’s not a clear win for the Galaxy S3, as IHS isn’t completely refuting DisplayMate’s findings. According to the survey, the iPhone 5 may offer a better performance thanks to “better calibration, higher brightness and superior power efficiency,” with Samsung’s display feeling “oversaturated and unrealistic.”

“Such improvements on the iPhone 5 are consistent with Apple’s philosophy of selecting features designed to yield profitable products that deliver a superior customer experience, rather than of providing technology for technology’s sake,” said Vinita Jakhanwal, an analyst at IHS.
The iPhone 5 offers a better pixel density (326 ppi vs 306 ppi) while the Galaxy S3 has the advantage of featuring true HD resolution (1280 x 720p vs 1136 x 640.) Choosing LCD over OLED could be an advantage for Apple as IHS expressed concern regarding the way organic materials age and OLED’s power efficiency.

According to CNET, DisplayMate’s Raymond Soneira voiced his concerns against the findings of this IHS study, “arguing that the color gamut test IHS conducted was based off of an old standard that has led to incorrect conclusions.”

Ultimately, it’s down to end users to select their favorite kind of display, and smartphone. In fact, users may not even perceive during actual day-to-day smartphone use some of the differences presented by such expert studies. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see more such comparisons in the future, especially as next-gen devices from these two smartphone families come out.

Samsung Galaxy Note II in India for Rs 39,900: Worth it?

Samsung Galaxy Note II - And now that it’s finally here, we do a quick round up of what we felt were the most pressing points around the launch of the new phone. Is it priced too high? Will it also have to compete with low cost tablets? And what are we most excited about?

The price Samsung Galaxy Note II:
Ok, this is probably the first aspect that most users look for before they consider buying the smartphone. The Galaxy Note II will cost Rs 39,990 and while this might sound steep right now, remember that while the S III launched at Rs 42,000, it was available on retail for Rs 38,000. So prices are likely to be significantly lower within a few days of it retailing. As of now, Flipkart is offering it for the same price, but we’d be very surprised if this continues to be the trend.

Samsung has assured users of an interest free EMI option spread out over nine months which means that the smartphone will cost around Rs 4500 per month should you go for this. This is a great deal to offer, especially if you don’t want to burn a Rs 40,000 hole in your pocket.

The screen size Samsung Galaxy Note II:
This is the aspect that makes the Note II what it is: a phablet . It’s not just a smartphone to make calls with, but a 5.5 inch screen with1280 x 720 pixel density, which can drastically alter the video watching experience on a hand-held device. For those who like to watch movies, read magazines, the big screen should definitely be a big plus point.  But remember that you can’t just put this device in your jeans pocket.

The Stylus Samsung Galaxy Note II:
As far as innovation goes, this is definitely a plus point, especially given that Samsung is trying to sell this device as the perfect companion for ‘creative’ people.  And we all fancy ourselves a little bit creative don’t we? Nice positioning Samsung!

The OS: Galaxy Note II ships with the latest Android OS Jelly Bean or Android 4.1. With features like Project Butter for faster functioning of the device, Google Now  ( a Siri like voice commands app but with the power of Google) , a smarter keyboard functionality and sharper notifications. For all Android fans, Jelly Bean should be reason enough to give this one a try.

iPhone 5 Fast Facts: Features, Price & Availability

iPhone 5 Fast Facts: Features, Price & Availability: Apple unleashed a pile of announcements this morning at its presser at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. But if you’re looking for a fast breakdown of the iPhone bits, here’s what went down today:

iPhone 5 Fast Facts: Features, Price & Availability
New size: At 7.6mm in depth and 112 grams, the new handset will be 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the predecessor.

Bigger screen: A taller (but not wider) 4-inch Retina Display at 1136 x 640-pixel resolution, which allows for additional row of app icons on the homescreen.

4G/LTE: Across all the carriers — Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. We don’t yet know what kind of pricing or surcharges may be involved however. Also on board: Support for HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA networks. Also dual-channel WiFi, with support for 802.11a/b/g/n routers and 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency spectrums.

A6 processor: Apple reports it is twice as fast as the previous A5  (which incidentally is being put into the newest iPod touch).

Camera: On the rear camera, there’s the same number of megapixels as the iPhone 4S — 8MP — but it now comes with panorama mode, faster photo capture, sapphire crystal lens, backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, a five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, spatial noise reduction and a dynamic low-light mode. Notably, the new phone will allow for simultaneous image and video capture, just like many Android devices do.

iOS 6 (of course), plus Siri support for launching apps

FaceTime over cellular networks

New dock connector: Enter “Lightning,” Apple’s newest connection standard that’s 80 percent smaller than the previous 30-pin version. (The company will also be offering adaptors so the new device will still work with old accessories.)

Colors: White & Silver (white front with an aluminum backing), and Black & Slate (black front with an anodized-looking rear panel).

Better battery life: 8 hours of talk time (3G), 8 hours of web browsing over 4G/LTE, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music playback and 225 hours of playtime.

Dates: Pre-orders start this Friday, 9/14, and devices will ship on September 21 in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. More countries will join in the availability list on the 28th, with a total of 100 countries getting it by the end of the year.
